Historic Murphysburg Preservation’s objective is to encourage historic preservation within the Murphysburg Residential Historic District and the City of Joplin. The organization was founded in 2003. In order to preserve the integrity of the downtown residential community, educate visitors about the history of the area, conserve scarce natural resources, and instill a sense of community pride, the organization has set out to accomplish these goals.
The Murphysburg Survey, the Post Art Library, Find a Grave, city directories, oral history accounts, the History of Jasper County publication, the Historic Joplin Blog, the Joplin area History & Mineral Museum, the Ancestry website, and newspaper articles are some of the sources used by HMP to gather historical narrative.
HMP is always interested in receiving further documents, oral histories, and images.
The city of Joplin designated Sergeant Avenue from Second Street to Fourth Street as the “Murphysburg Residential Historic District” in 1992, and the street was closed to traffic. Following a petition from residents in neighboring communities, the city of Joplin enlarged the historic district in 2004, at the request of the residents. Sergeant Avenue, from First Street to Seventh Street, and Moffet Avenue, from First Street to Fourth Street, were included in the historic district’s boundaries. In 2015, the Murphysburg survey was carried out by Rosin, an architectural company. It wasn’t until later in the year, however, that the Missouri Advisory Council on Historical Preservation voted to add the Murphysburg Historic District to the National Register of Historic Places.
Founded in 2005 with the goal of promoting and stimulating historic awareness throughout the neighborhood, Historic Murphysburg Preservation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to implementing philanthropic and educational initiatives.
